Laboratory Test: PAH research

Contact: Sebastian Meyer

Aim:

  • Suitability assessment of analysis methods for the determination of the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in wood gasification residues.
  • Evaluation of the efficiency of a thermal process for the reduction of the PAH content in gasification residues.

Method:

  • Application of the analysis methods DIN 13877:A (extraction with acetone) and DIN 13877:B (Soxhlet extraction with toluene) for the determination of the PAH content in gasification residues.
  • Analysis of the PAH content of untreated and thermally treated gasification residues.

Results:

  • Analysis method DIN 13877:A (extraction with acetone) is not suitable for the determination of the PAH content in gasification residues. The application of the analysis method DIN 13877:B (Soxhlet extraction with  toluene) is recommended for this purpose.
  • The Σ EPA16 PAH content in gasification residues was reduced by up to 82% after thermal processing of the residues.
