Research and teaching

I studied Agricultural Sciences, where I acquired a broad knowledge of practical agriculture with a specialization in crop production. Owing to my interest in plant nutrition, I joined at the Halle Plant Nutrition Laboratory for my Diploma project. During my Diploma studies and subsequently in my PhD project, my special interest was in the mechanisms of manganese homeostasis in plants. In this context, my research was focused on an exciting family of metal transport proteins. One of its members mediates the translocation of manganese from the root to the shoot, while another one detoxifies manganese during iron deficiency and determines the correct localization of manganese in the embryo of developing seeds. During these studies, I adopted micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) tomography at the Diamond Light Source (UK) and numerous other molecular and analytical techniques, some of which I supervise now at the Halle Plant Nutrition Laboratory.

Currently I mainly work on calcium signalling in relation to nitrogen nutrition, specifically regarding the assimilation and detoxification of ammonium. We approach this question with different techniques, for example with the luminescent Aequorin and the fluorescent Yellow Cameleon reporter proteins. This project was originally initiated at the Agrochemisches Institut Piesteritz.

I act as laboratory manager, as representative for biological safety, and as occupational health and safety representative of the Plant Nutrition Laboratory. I am in charge of various analytical instruments and of our microscopy suite.

My teaching programme is directed to undergraduate and graduate students and ranges from applied fertilization to nutritional physiology of plants. This includes lectures, seminars, and practical courses concerning the mineral nutrition of crops, diagnosis of nutritional disorders of crops, and molecular physiology of plant nutrition. I furthermore supervise BSc and MSc final projects, as well as short-term lab rotas.
