Research

During my undergraduate studies of Biology at the University of Hamburg, I rapidly realised my strong interest in molecular biology and plant science. Therefore, I decided to work for my BSc. thesis on the Quorum Sensing system of rhizobia that is required to interact with plants for symbiotic nitrogen fixation. To get further expertise on plant and crop research, I decided to move to Halle where I continued my studies in the MSc. Crop Science. During my studies, I did two research internships in the Plant Nutrition Laboratory that led to my decision to pursue my MSc. thesis in this group. There, I worked again on symbiotic nitrogen fixation but changed the side from bacteria to the plant. I localised calcium-transporting pumps in symbiotic membranes of root nodules and initiated a method to measure cellular calcium concentrations in this organ. Because of my work on calcium signalling, I successfully applied for a calcium-related project in the PhD programme of a new Research Training Group, RTG2498 that is concerned with organellar interactions in plants. Since October 2019, I am working on my PhD thesis. The aim of my project is to decipher mechanisms of calcium homeostasis in plant cell compartments along the secretory pathway, which is believed to regulate many cellular processes involved in growth and response to environmental stimuli.
