Precision Phenotyping
Objective
The Precision Phenotyping research group and professorship, established in 2026, aims to develop and apply methods and models for the phenotyping of field crops.
Background
Successful crop production requires varieties that are well adapted to the environmental conditions under which they are grown. Crops, growing conditions, and management practices must be aligned to achieve optimal results. This complex agricultural system is under massive pressure — driven by climate change, global population growth, and the need to reduce agriculture's ecological footprint and land use.
Crops are essential for human nutrition. Understanding the dynamics of plant growth under realistic field conditions helps to make existing crop systems fit for the future. Precision Phenotyping makes a significant contribution to this goal — both in research and in the practical fields of plant breeding, variety testing, and crop production.
Precision Phenotyping sits at the interface between agricultural research and computer science. Our focus is specifically on the study of field crops using robotics, computer vision, and machine learning.
Campus and field site
The Precision Phenotyping group is distributed across two locations: the Heide Campus and the Julius Kühn Field. While a central phenotyping infrastructure is being established at the Julius Kühn Field, research and teaching activities also draw on spaces and IT infrastructure at the Heide Campus.
