“Why so angry? Background and causes of the farmers' protests”

A new publication examines the causes, dynamics, and social significance of farmers' protests in Germany, France, and Poland.
The agricultural protests at the turn of 2023/2024 set Germany—and Europe—in motion. With unprecedented intensity and duration, farmers took to the streets to express their discontent. The trigger was the reduction of agricultural diesel subsidies, but it quickly became clear that the protests went far beyond a mere reaction to financial losses. They revealed deeper tensions between agriculture, politics, and society.

The book is published in the ASG series on rural social issues.

It was developed as part of the agricultural socio-economics platform established by AgrarBündnis.

The platform sees itself as a forum for actors who are committed to making the social science perspective on agriculture more visible in scientific and socio-political discourses, so that social issues in agriculture are given greater attention.

The editors see the book as an invitation to take a closer look at the social situation of agriculture, the areas of tension in agricultural policy decisions, and the social background to these conflicts. This is because—according to the central thesis of many of the contributions—the protests by farmers are an expression of fundamental social controversies that extend far beyond the agricultural sector.
