The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is also becoming increasingly common in everyday university life. Many students use AI-powered applications for research, organizing their work, and writing. AI can be a helpful tool, but it does not replace independent academic work. Responsibility for content and results remains with the students.The university therefore recommends that students develop skills in working with AI. This includes understanding both the potential and the limitations of the technology. AI can process information quickly, but it is prone to errors and may produce inaccurate results. Results must therefore always be critically evaluated.
MLU offers MLU members free access to professional AI tools (including ChatGPT 4.0) (“MLU-AI”). When using MLU-AI, prompts are stored on a dedicated server in a manner that complies with data protection regulations and is anonymized. In contrast, many external AI applications require individual registration, often charge a fee for the professional version, and it is frequently unclear what happens to the input data (prompts). Students should therefore (after a brief training session) use MLU’s free, secure, and data-protection-compliant AI service; it can also be used by instructors together with students as part of their courses. To provide support, MLU offers an AI portal with information on tools, data protection, and guidelines.
The extent to which the use of AI is permitted in courses (e.g., assistance with writing course reports and theses) and how this must be documented in each case depends on the respective module coordinators. MLU has published “Guidelines for the Use of Generative AI Systems at MLU in Academic Studies and Teaching” on this subject.
